Research, MRes or equivalent

In academia, MRes (Master of Research) is a postgraduate degree that is research-focused, typicallypursued by individuals aiming for a career in research or further academic studies, such as a PhD. It iscommonly offered in the UK and other Commonwealth countries and serves as a bridge betweenundergraduate study and more advanced research, like a PhD.

Here's how MRes and related research degrees differ:

MRes (Master of Research) 
  •  Focus: Primarily research-oriented, with a small taught component. Most of the degreeconsists of working on a major research project or thesis. 
  •  Duration: Typically 1 year (full-time) or 2 years (part-time).
  •  Purpose: Prepares students for PhD-level research or research-intensive roles in industry oracademia. 
  •  Coursework: Minimal. Focus is on developing research skills and completing a substantial dissertation or research project. 
  •  Typical candidates: Those aiming to pursue a PhD or work in research fields.

MPhil (Master of Philosophy)

Focus: Heavily research-based, often considered a stepping-stone to a PhD. It may involveproducing a substantial piece of original research, much like a PhD, but on a smaller scale. 

 Duration: Typically 1-2 years (full-time). 

 Purpose: A research-focused degree often used as a precursor or alternative to a PhD. 

 Coursework: Generally, no formal coursework. Students work closely with a supervisor toproduce a thesis.

 

MSc by Research (or MScR)

 
Focus: A research master's degree, though it may contain more taught elements than anMRes. 
 Duration: Typically 1 year (full-time). 
 Purpose: Prepares students for either further research (like a PhD) or research-focusedcareers in industry. 
 Coursework: Mix of re

PhD (Doctor of Philosophy)
